The literal translation of mamahi’i me’a is to hurt for something. The english translation does not fully depict the depth of mamahi’i me’a but we will attempt to unpack it best for one to fully realize the weight of this concept. Mamahi’i (to be in pain; physically, emotionally, mentally) shows intense feelings about something or someone that stimulates this demonstration of striving, fighting or standing up for. Me’a is literally translated to a thing - a person, place, material...anything really. Therefore, mamahi’i me’a together is understood as a passionate feeling towards a thing to the point where this feeling is so intense it metaphorically hurts with passion.
